Question :1

A thief is spotted by a policeman from a distance of 100 m. When the policeman starts the chase, the thief also starts running. If the speed of the thief is 8 km/hour and that of the policeman is 10 km/hour, then how far will the thief have to run before he is overtaken ?

Answer: (a)

Difference of distance covered by Police and thief is 100 m

Speed of Police = 10 km/h Speed of theif = 8 km/hr

let time be t

10 × $5/{18} t - 8 5/{18}t$ = 100 [∵ D = 8T]

${5t}/9$ = 100

t = 180 S

Theif ran = 8 × $5/{18}$ × 180 = 400 m

Question :2

A person goes from a place A to another place B at the speed of 4 km/h and returns at a speed of 3 km/h. If he takes 7 h in all, then what is the distance between the two places ?

Answer: (c)

Time = ${\text"Distance"}/{\text"Speed"}$

Let distance travel from A to B be x km.

According to question

∴ 7 = $x/4 + x/3 = {x(3 + 4)}/{12} ={7x}/{12}$⇒x = 12 km

Question :3

A man cycles with a speed of 10 km/h and reaches his office at 1 p.m. However, when he cycles with a speed of 15 km/h, he reaches his office at 11 am. At what speed sould he cycle, so that he reaces his office at 12 noon?

Answer: (b)

$t_2 – t_1 = 2h⇒ x/{10} - x/{15} = 2$

⇒${3x - 2x}/{30}$ = 2 Relative speed

x = 60 km.

= 15 – 10 = 5km 1h.

speed = ${distance}/{\text"relative speed"} = {60}/5$ = 12 km/h.

Question :4

A man rides a horse at the rate of 11 miles an hour, but stops for 5 min to change horse at the end of every seventh mile. How long will he take to cover a distance of 96 miles ? (Approx.)

Answer: (d)

Time taken to travel 96 miles

= $96/11$ hrs. = 8 hrs and 43 minutes

During the journey of 96 miles, he has to stop for 13 times to change the horse.

∴ Total stoppage time

= 13 × 5 = 65 mins. = 1 hr and 5 mins.

Hence the total time

= 8 hrs and 43 mins + 1 hr and 5 mins.

= 9 hrs and 48 mins.

Question :5

The speeds of three buses are in the ratio 2 : 3 : 4. The time taken by these buses to travel the same distance will be in the ratio

Answer: (d)

Ratio of speed = 2 : 3 : 4

Ratio of time = $1/2 : 1/3 : 1/4 = {12}/2 : {12}/3 : {12}/4$ = 6 : 4 : 3

So, option (d) is correct.
